Why appearance is not important

What do they show us about beauty and appearance? Is it the 'perfection' of the right sized body? The eyebrows that are on fleek? Maybe it is the curve of the jaw or the shape of the hands. But is this something a person can control? A person can't control the shape of their face, the way their body curves, or what their hands look like. But yet, we are often judged on this. If we do not look like what is on TV, in magazines, or even described in books, then we are other.

We are not beautiful. Most people would agree that this is wrong, that we shouldn't judge others on their hair, clothing or shape.

But it still happens. Because our society encourages the behavior. Women's magazines include fashion articles, tips on make-up, new hairstyles that are in. Men's magazines display a heavily muscled man on the front, encouraging men to find gyms, work-out, drink protein shakes.

No one is free from the images that our society feeds us. The fact of the matter is that this is purely superficial, yet we base our interactions with a person on our first impressions of them. If they do not fit the image of what our society calls successful and beautiful then immediately the interaction is marred by out judgement of them. In no way am I a perfect person. I harp on people judging others by appearance alone, yet find myself making comments in my mind.

Fighting the societal rules and norms is hard. As humans we want to categorize ourselves. Us versus Them. We put other humans into boxes so that our lives can become easier to understand. But once you put someone in a box, it is very hard for them to get out. So stop putting people into boxes.

Treat them like people, not objects to be judged. Every human is unique and interesting with their own back-stories and experiences. So stop putting your life before their's, and ask yourself, "Can that person control that aspect of themselves? Should I judge that person at all? If we could get on the same page and stop shoving images and stereotypes down each other's throats, maybe, some day way in the future, we could finally live in a world where people didn't have to hide who they truly were behind layers of images.

As a college student, my backpack is an extension of myself in many ways. It contains my notes, pens, and computer vital for my success in college. It contains the snacks and water bottle I need to survive long days on campus. It also contains the "in-case" items that help put my mind at rest if I forgot something from home: extra hair ties, masks, and that backup-backup snack.

With so much in my backpack important to me and my life on campus, it is no wonder that I can get apprehensive about it when it is not with me or in my line of sight. And that makes me wonder. I can be a little cynical of society. It is not so much that I distrust anyone in particular, but I realize that a lot of trouble and hassle can come from one person who just doesn't care about others. It is not that I think that everyone is going to steal my backpack or its contents, but one person sure could.

I did not think about it too much until I found myself leaving my things in the university library while going to the restroom last week. I hurried along so that I could get back to my things, but in the process, I realized that perhaps I was not as distrustful as I thought I was.

Admittedly, one of the reasons I left my things and backpack at a table while using the restroom instead of taking it all with me was laziness. I did not want to have to put everything in my backpack, lug it all to the restroom, only to have to set everything back up a few minutes later.

Yet, I found another reason to leave my things behind: the stranger across the table from me. I never said a word to the man. I don't even think we made eye contact. However, I had been sitting across him for over an hour, so in some strange way, I trusted him.

In a world of conmen, tricksters, sexual confused persons and more societal disorders, nothing is true until proved beyond reasonable doubt. Abeg shine your eyes o. Wow, that simply just explained how people are easily excited by what they see , also why girls go a long way with their appearance to attract guys and also how cunning a person can be. Like Like. As women we are so hard on ourselves, trying to attain these unrealistic levels of perfection that have been set by society, that we sometimes overlook just how beautiful we are in our own right and in our own way.

Like you said we need to look inward and see our own beauty. More than this, if we seek perfection in others we deceive ourselves equally and make gods of men. I needed to hear what you had to say. I am overweight but I try and look at the positive things in my life.

I like to make people laugh and I have a beautiful smile. You are commenting using your WordPress. You are commenting using your Google account. You are commenting using your Twitter account.
