What is denmark

One of my all-time favorite cities is Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. There is so much to see and do and every time I go I find something new to love. Copenhagen is the Michelin Star Restaurant capital of Scandinavia and has accrued 33 of them in total.

Zero regrets. Copenhagen is made for cycling, museum hopping, and shopping. For more information, read our guide to Copenhagen. Denmark is famous for being the home of Lego, arguably the most iconic toy of the last century. Over the years, the toys were adapted until it became the quintessential plastic bricks we know and love today.

Denmark is famous for being a country where you are never more than 50 kilometers 31 miles from the sea. A love of the sea binds Danes together, young and old. All Danish kids learn to swim by law, and the sea is an integral part of Danish culture.

Historically, most of Danish trade was done on the waterways. In the beautiful Skagen region, you can see the place where the North and Baltic seas meet, but do not mix. The stretch of coast between Agger and Hanstholm is known as Cold Hawaii, and has 31 great surf spots.

It got its name for the wind conditions which are similar to those in Hawaii , USA. In the s, it was famous for trading ships to south Norway. Denmark is known for its exquisite architecture, and lovers of Grand Designs will have their work cut out deciding which building is their favorite. Modern public buildings like the Black Diamond library in Copenhagen are iconic works of architectural art. Look at Isbjerget The Iceberg in Aarhus, for instance.

What looks like a spiky iceberg is actually an apartment complex, funded by the Danish Pension Fund. Minimalist but cozy, those are the two best words I can find to describe Danish design. Hint: no bright lights in the center of the room, please. One of the most iconic Danish design pieces was the egg chair of the s, designed by Arne Jacobsen in Denmark is famous for its fancy royal designs too. In , the first porcelain produced in Denmark was made for the company now called Royal Copenhagen Porcelain.

The iconic plate, the Blue Fluted Plain, takes brush strokes to complete. Denmark is famous for its quirky traditions. Unmarried Danes at 25 will have an unconventional cinnamon shower, courtesy of their families.

In fact, the Danes get a bit obsessed with marriage. If you thought that the previous traditions were strange, brace yourself. Cake man is in the same shape as a gingerbread man, decorated with candy, icing and sometimes Danish flags. To make this situation even stranger, everyone in the room screams at the point the knife makes contact with the cake.

When my vocabulary gets a little colorful, I sometimes resort to using Danish profanities. Danes borrow cuss words from English like others borrow books from a library. We don't mind admitting that some of our Danish traditions seem rather weird to the modern eye, as they include batting at a black cat in a barrel at the annual carnival "fastelavn" and burning a witch on a bonfire at Sankt Hans midsummer's eve. But don't worry, we've toned down the craziness a bit, so nowadays the barrels are simply decorated with cut out versions of black cats and the bonfires only burn doll versions of witches.

If this isn't a fun fact, we don't know what is! Because Denmark is home to the world's oldest amusement park, Bakken , as well as the second oldest one, Tivoli Gardens. You find Bakken located just a short 20 minute train ride from Copenhagen central station and Tivoli Gardens is located just on the opposite side of the street from the station in the centre of our vibrant capital. Both of them are brilliant suggestions if you're looking for a fun-filled day - and that's a fact!

That's right. LEGO trees, leaves and all of those fun green elements are made from a sugarcane-based plastic. This means that there are plenty of opportunities for you to go on an island getaway! If you're looking for a real challenge while you're in Denmark, try not to see the ocean at one point. This is one challenge you'll most likely be unable to complete as you cannot be more than 52km from the ocean in Denmark. There are plenty of sandy beaches within 30 minutes of the city centre, but you can also just take a dip in harbour as the water is clean enough to swim in.

You'll find a handful of harbour baths along Copenhagen's harbour, such as at Islands Brygge , Kalvebod Brygge , and Nordhavn. Oh and by the way, you'll also find clean harbours in our other big cities: Aarhus , Odense and Aalborg. Not only is our city harbours clean enough to swim in, but we are also used to drinking water from the tap. And you can enjoy this privilege as well during your stay because you'll find some of the world's cleanest tap water in Denmark.

And same-sex marriage was granted in Some say, that you are always close to a Beach, and that is in fact true. But the weather might not be with you.. Denmark is often referred to as one of the leading countries when it comes to renewable energy.

We are especially good at manufacturing wind turbines, which we shipped around the whole world. But there are also a lot of danish people who sing in English and are very famous internationally. Many foreigners who are visiting Denmark quickly finds out that danish people are a bit introvert. That is only until we start drinking, and Danish people are especially known for drinking a lot of beer. The third largest beer brewery in the world is from Denmark, Carlsberg.

Probably the best beer in the world. At least not comparing to the rest of the world. Our politicians and people currently living of welfare would say that they are poor. The system is overall great, we have free hospitals and free education - Actually! But the system breaks, when the working people sometimes, because of taxes, has less money after taxes are paid, than people living on wellfare. Okay, So I don't really know, if this is something that Denmark is known and famous for. You should know, before visiting Denmark that the temperatures, and the weather is a tricky thing.

Just two weeks ago, it was 32 degrees celcius 90 Fahrenheit , and now it is only 13 Celcius 55 Fahrenheit. So make sure to pack for changing weathers! Read this article about packing up for Denmark to learn more about this. When people visit Denmark, they often get surprised about how much we like fitness. In general, danish people care a lot about health and well being, and besides staying active in the outdoors or when they go to their local sports club, they also have a fitness membership.

It has always been very popular to go to a local sports club in Denmark, but the fitness-wave has definitely stolen some of the members from these sports clubs. Many people own their own training gear and buy dietary supplements to support their training. I have been in contact with a fitness equipment provider called Billig Fitness.

This is a danish webshop who sells cheap training equipment to both private people, firms and institutions. They also expanded their business, so they now sell products in Norway and Sweden as well. It is nice to see, when an associate is doing well, and are expanding their business to our Scandinavian friends. So first of all! And yes ofcourse Danish people also use antidepressive, but I am pretty sure we are by far not the worst.

I think many of our worries is smaller because we always have a safety net, if we get unemployed, both if we are fired or quit our selves. Everything is covered. You never know if you someday would be the least fortunate. About the cinnamon, this is very common in Jutland. If not more common than pebber, then very close to.
